This past weekend we enjoyed our first mini-vacation here in Haiti. We have a busy couple weeks coming with the joint training conference, a team coming from the US and a trip to Lagonav. So why not spend a few days away from home and let the kids experience another part of Haiti.Our friends Randy & Karen Lodder were gracious enough to host us at a beautiful spot in Port-au-Prince. One doesn't always think of Port and beauty in the same sentence, but there are spots. The place they are housesitting is located in a neighbor hood off Delmas 75. Looking out from the back patio you see a hillside covered in small trees and down the hill the city. Very relaxing for a spot in the middle of a city of 2 million.
We did some shopping, the kids got to play at a big park with lots of play equipment and we spent part of the day at the Baptist Mission. To get there you drive up the mountainside on the south side of the city. Up, up, around the corners, past men working on the side of the narrow road. Your ears pop, the the temperature slowly cools. Not cold, not really cold by North American standards, but cooler than the 30-35C we have been having most days.
They have a small zoo which the kids enjoyed. The museum has lots of history on Haiti and artifacts from different parts of the country. Heather had fun bartering with the street vendors trying to find a stone statue of lady with a baby. Then back down the mountain. All made for a good weekend away.
