Our team from Lake Sherwood OPC arrived Friday and today we made the journey to Lagonav. The whole Hopp family is coming along to provide moral support, cook and help with the Vacation Bible School programs. Ethan, Emma Grace and Elijah donned their life jackets for the trip over. We hope to see dolphins, and though we did not sight any the kids did enjoy the many flying fish. Some of them can glide several hundred meters over the water.
Today the boat was full. The cabin down below was full as was the upper deck. Lots of people and anpil bagay, lots of stuff. It was a smooth day and after some encouragement courtesy the ferry horn blasting, we made off for Lagonav just before 11AM.
Bienvenue a Anse-a-Galets. That means welcome to Ansagale. The Port Authority on Lagonav has been working really hard on the wharf facility these past few months. There are new buildings, a gate and they even collect a fee to enter the dock area. Since people have to pay a fee to get into the dock area, there are not as many people blocking your path off the boat. But it still makes for a busy scene. We even saw guys drive a couple brand new motorcycles right off the ferry.
Can you spot the blan on the dock? Not too hard to pick out. We waited for the crowds to abate somewhat and then collected our things off the ferry. Always wanting a little extra, the workers from the ferry tried to get me to pay them extra to get everything off the boat. Sorry guys, but as far as I am concerned that is included in the extra baggage fee :)
It is the dry season and that means dust. Lots of it. Seems that in Ansagale you suffer either from the dust or slugging through the mud. Nothing in between. Today the Wesleyan Mission in Ansagale sponsored a town cleanup. 500 people showed up to collect up garbage and for general cleanup. They were rewarded with a meal. We also enjoyed some wonderful rice and beans that our friends Barry and Beth brought to our house. Extra from the work day!
Here is part of the team enjoying the Haitian cuisine. And if it not spicy enough you can always add some Louisiana Hot Sauce. That's Creole cuisine too right! Tomorrow it is off to church and then four days of VBS at two different Lagonav churches. Continue to pray particularly for safety in our travels.
