Any of you who visited us in Haiti met Wilson. He was our yard maintenance guy. He wasn't really security, didn't like to garden. But he did take care of our yard at Kaliko, raking leaves, cutting the grass and watering the trees. He worked for us for our first four years in Haiti, for the Baugh family before us. He had lived at the house for nearly thirty-five years and even helped build it.
Sadly, Wilson was found dead in our yard today (September 7, 2011). We were saddened to hear this news. Our Associate General Secretary for Foreign Missions had just visited with him on Monday before leaving Haiti for home. Wilson was only 58 years old.
We did not always get along but we are glad to have known him. Wilson was one of the people God used for our sanctification and growth in grace as we learned to love the people of Haiti. We are particularly saddened because of his spiritual state. He had joined us for worship on Sunday mornings many times. He heard the same gospel preached as we did. But sadly his lifestyle never corresponded with his profession made when he was young. We never know people's spiritual state for sure and can only rely on the mercy of God.
It is hard to be away from Haiti when these things happen. God has been gracious in giving us people on the ground who can take care of things for us. Do pray as we look for a new man to live at the house and take care of it.
