Pousyè

Pousyè is the Haitian Creole word for dust.  And you hear it a lot on Lagonav.  The main town on the east cost is Anse-a-Galets.  During the dry season it can seem like a desert with the white dust covering everything - houses, streets, vehicles and even people.  When the wind blows clouds of dust fill the town.

We are currently at the tail end of the dry season and everyone is talking about the coming rains.  In some areas of Haiti like Port-au-Prince it is raining nearly every night.  Sometimes as much as 2-3 inches at a time.  Then the problem becomes flooding and mudslides.  But on Lagonav they are still waiting for the spring rains.

Of course, there are still places on Lagonav where there is green grass and trees giving good shade.  This past weekend I stayed on the W.I.S.H. (West Indies Self Help) compound with our friends.  The trees are greening up and some flowers even beginning to bloom.  It is a nice respite from the clouds of dust.
