We are currently on vacation in Bradenton, FL, near Tampa. We are enjoying visiting with friends and just spending time together as a family. Today we headed off to Venice Beach to search for shark teeth.
Ethan is the one in our family who is crazy about sharks. He has become something of an expert so we are delighted to be near the ocean. We found out from one of his DVDs of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week that Venice Beach is famous for a place to find shark teeth right on the beach. And we are staying only 30 minutes away.
So today we were joined by our good friends the Avery’s for a beach day. A big part of the day was spent sifting sand looking for shark teeth. And we did find some! The two at the top are fossilized shark teeth found among the shells and sand. We tried finding the teeth near the beach and up by the dunes. In the end the teeth were found from sand brought up from the bottom in 4 feet of water.
The wind was up so the waves were exciting too. The kids had fun building sand castles but the waves won in the end. Here is a picture of our kids with Angel and Belbet in front of their creations.
It was a fun day at Venice Beach. I think we will go again this time better armed for finding the shark teeth. Some folks have found fossilized teeth as big as 3-4 inches across. Pretty amazing stuff. The last picture is the kids under the fishing pier just down the road at Casperson Beach. There were lots of people fishing off the pier and I think Ethan and Elijah would like to do some fishing while we are in Florida too. We will see if we can make time for that.
