It is Saturday and we have finished our second day at Gran Lagon. Hard to believe but we are more than half way through the trip. For some this is a high and some a low. One of the traditions we have on our teams is to have each person give a high and low for the day (thanks Randy and Karen!).
Gran Lagon is about an hour drive up the coast from Ansagale. With the cloudy weather and some rain we though we might encounter some serious mud along the route. Not this time. God has been very gracious on our travels. You can also see the first church, Plenn Mapou, and Doglas where we will worship Sunday and do VBS on Monday and Tuesday.
The main leader of the church at Gran Lagon is Cenet Joseph. He has been a faithful man in attending our teaching seminars, leading the church and being humble enough to realize he is not gifted in every area. His life has been a hard one. If you do not believe that Christians are called to suffer, Cenet will make you understand. He lost a child several years ago and then his wife this past year. She was sick for a very long time and though we prayed God saw fit to take her home. God continues to provide for Cenet and his kids.
One of the main blessings and purposes of the trips is to encourage the fostering of relationships between our team and the kids. You don’t need to be able to speak Creole to love a child. The kids love to have their picture taken – though not all. We had a little girl this morning who had obviously been raised on the story of Elizabet. She is the white woman who eats little Haitian children! The little girl sat in the front row with her hands over her eyes for about 40 minutes. Finally Marisa picked her up and after a bit the girl fell asleep. Another bond formed!
The location at Gran Lagon is really conducive to the program. There is space inside for everyone to sit inside(though the crowd of about 75 filled the space to the brim). Outside the open dirt areas are great for games. In the picture above the kids, many dressed up for VBS, play a game where we call out numbers and those assigned the number try to be the first to get to the ball in the middle.
Keep praying for the kids of Gran Lagon. Life is hard right beside the sea. Many suffer from malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Good fresh water is hard to come by. This is definitely one of the poorer areas of Haiti. But the joy of the Lord is their strength. And ours too! Thanks for keeping the team in your prayers.
