The Provisional Electoral Council here in Haiti posted their preliminary results last evening. This was much anticipated and they waited until the very last minute. After all, the elections were held nearly 10 days ago. The results put Mirlande Manigat and Jude Celestin in a runoff, having garnered 31% and 22% respectively. The other candidate Michel Martelly got over 21%, very close to Celestin.
The announcement set off violence and demonstrations all over Port-au-Prince. I talked to a friend in Port this morning and she said they tried to get from home to Adoration Christian School but only made it half way. People were burning tires and blocking the road. There were almost no other vehicles on the road. They had to take another route home as the places they had previously driven were now blocked. American Airlines halted flights out of the capital for Wednesday.
Here in Kaliko things are quiet. I went to the nearby town of Williamson to get some food items and people were calm. The normal market day is Wednesday and things seemed to be functioning as normal. All this to say we are fine here at home in Kaliko.
Please pray for this country. It appears things will continue to be unsettled as the Provisional Electoral Council deals with people contesting the results and setting up of a runoff, currently due for January 16th. Our hope is the violence will taper off after a couple days. People are not happy, however. We are safe for now and in His hands. Thanks for praying.
