Recently I had the privilege of touring the churches we work with on Lagonav with the Baugh family. Matt Baugh, missionary to Haiti with the Orthodox Presbyterian Church who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in May 2006 had a vision for schools connected with the churches on the island.
Matt's family - his mother Barbara, his father Lee, his younger brother Ben along with elder Ken Hargis arrived in Haiti January 22. They spent the night at the Kaliko Beach Club and we caught the ferry over to Lagonav in the morning.
We spent two days on the island touring schools. They were long days in the back of the pickup truck. And not without adventure. On the first day out we made our way to Lapye and Plenn Mapou. We were hoping to be able to drive all the way up the mountain at Lapye, but our pickup was not up to the task (maybe it had something to do with being a GMC rather than a Toyota : ) We hiked to the school that meets in the church building. The kids regaled us with some songs and everyone had a chance to talk with the teachers and encourage them all.
Back down the mountain, a short break for lunch and then off to Plenn Mapou. Several of the kids at the school had prepared songs and poems. We enjoyed a small snack, distributed some candy and it was time to head for home. Long days.
On the second day we visited the schools at Bwa Pen and Gran Lagon. Each of these schools have 4 teachers and about 50 students. We are excited that these children have a chance to get an education through the hard work of the extended Baugh family and giving of generous donors. Keep praying that the kids would learn well, the teachers would be well equipped for the task and that the whole process would be used to bring glory to God.
