Thirty miles does seem like a long way to go. But I always enjoy amazing our visitors with tales of traveling on Lagonav. “It took you how long to go to church?” And believe me, your backside feels every mile of the trip. And no, we didn’t have to walk the whole way behind the truck – though we did have a breakdown and have to push to get it started again!
This past Lord’s Day I was over on the island with a small group of guys from a church in Tampa, FL. My good friend Dustyn agreed to preach at one church and did duty at the other. Just over 3 hours to make it to our highest church (at 2600 feet). After the service and time of greeting the saints it was back down the mountain to the valley church of Plenn Mapou (at only 2000 feet).
Following the service it was time to go home. Another 3 hours or so on the road. It usually happens that we have some problem with the truck. This time it was electrical problem that kept the driver from restarting after stalling on a hill. We were at the bottom of the hill with a mud puddle behind. How to push start it without getting our Sunday best all muddy? Give it a shove partway up the hill, and jumpstart it in reserve. After two tries we got it going again and home.
We had left the guest house at 6AM. We arrived back just before 4PM after traveling about 30 miles. We averaged about 5 miles per hour. Not bad for a day out on the rough roads of Lagonav. We were in time to eat some supper, watch a colorful sunset and then go to bed ahead of an early morning ferry ride back to the mainland. We got wet but a quick shower and breakfast meant it was long forgotten.
