Coloradans in Haiti

Our latest visitors come to us from Reformation OPC in Castle Rock, CO.  I first met Chad and Megan Roach, brother and sister, while staying at their home on a presbytery visit.  Heather also met them when she talked about Haiti at their church while I was suddenly called away to a funeral.

They are here in Haiti for 8 days to take time with our family and see what God is doing here.  They have spent lots of time with the kids and all three of ours have had a blast.  They have helped with homeschooling and they have been a great resource as they were homeschooled themselves.  We traveled to see some other missions and this past weekend traveled to Lagonav.

On Friday we traveled to the market in Titayen.  There is always lots of produce, with more coming all the time as illustrated by this tap-tap loaded down with plantain.  Chad even ventured to negotiate to buy some garlic.  He did great despite the language barrier and didn’t pay an arm and a leg.

After that we went to the nearby Mission of Hope.  There are lots of fellow Canadian working there.  Our friend Rachel runs the orphanage there and graciously agreed to give us a tour.  In the picture at left Emma holds on of the two newest arrivals.  This is Hanna and not shown is her twin brother Jeremiah.  Hard to believe now but they were 2 and 3 lbs when first brought to the orphanage.  Hanna is certainly eating well.

We toured the rest of their compound including the food warehouse and schoolroom for missionary kids.  Then we went out for lunch at Gwo Papa Poul or “Big Daddy Chicken”.  It was a fun time and though we didn’t have the chicken the food was good.  We even topped it off with real ice cream, a real treat.

Finally a quick note about our trip to Lagonav.  We traveled over on Saturday.  The water was blue and calm, the sun was hot.  We did have to wait at the dock until nearly 12:30PM before the ferry took off for Lagonav.  Who is that in the foam?  That is Chad and me, can you see us.  Sunday we worshipped at the church in Gran Lagon, there to encourage leader Cenet after the recent death of his wife.  It was very encouraging to see most of the church walk over to Cenet’s house following the service to pray with him and his children.
