The seminary, started to train Haitian leaders for the Reformed and Presbyterian church, started classes three weeks ago. The various OPC and PCA missionaries are pulling our weight in terms of the teaching load. Since church history is the thing I enjoy most I am teaching Ancient Church History this semester. It has been a good opportunity to go back over the material from classes I took 10 years ago (wow!). The 20 men you see in the picture above are from churches all over.
During my second lecture on Saturday, we got talking about various heresies that cropped up in the early church period. And it is amazing how today we can see new faces on the same old heresies. Just like Burn-E has to keep on replacing the same bulb, the church combats the same old untruths again and again.
Our whole family thinks Burn-E is funny. And we also think that his life sums up what our life feels like sometimes. It is funny but it also reflects life here in Haiti. You fix one problem, and another one crops up. Whether it is the house, the truck or even the various relationships we find ourselves in, it can seem like one step forward, one step back. There are always lots of light bulbs to replace.
The creation has indeed been subject to frustration – it is a very appropriate and descriptive word. Things can seem out of control. But because we serve the Creator of the universe it only seems that way. He knows all our of our comings and goings. Watch Burn-E, laugh, think, reflect. We think it will be a profitable seven and a half minutes spent.
