Our trip home from Lagonav today was made on the new boat purchased by the Wesleyan Mission on Lagonav. Since they run a hospital and fairly large compound, they need a boat primarily to haul fuel to the island along with their teams. The former lobster boat arrived in Haiti just last week. When Pastor Dan asked said they were looking for training trips for their new captains we volunteered.
Since we could leave on our own schedule we didn’t have to rise at 4AM. We left the guest house in the rain at 6AM. The day was cloudy but the rain held off for most of the trip. It was a little rough on the first segment but smoothed out nicely the closer we got to the mainland. We figured we had about 5000 lbs of people and luggage. The 225 HP John Deere marine engine pushed us along at about 8 1/2 knots, making the crossing in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Amazingly they figure it only takes about 3 gallons of diesel fuel to make the crossing. Very efficient!
The best part of crossing on the Breezy Sea was being able to dock at the wharf at Kaliko. I called last night to get the number of the owner and he said it would be no problem to bring the boat in there. Minutes from home we were able to be at the house in record time. No hassles at the wharf.
While we didn’t see any dolphins this crossing we did see several really large schools of flying fish. As you watched off the side of the boat about 50 fish would leap from the water and fly off 50-100 meters. Quite a sight. The scenery was beautiful too. We don’t get many cloudy days here so it makes for fun photography.
