Earthquake in Haiti; Hopps are OK

The earthquake in Haiti just before 5PM did damage places south of us but here at Kaliko we only experienced strong tremors.  No damage to buildings or property.

Heather was at home on our deck.  She said at first she thought a truck had an accident on the highway and was rolling down the hill towards the house.  The tremors lasted about 20 seconds here.  The kids and I were down in the pool at Kaliko.  I stood up and had a hard time staying in one place.  The kids did not freak out but the pool was like a wave pool, with water spilling out the sides.  We are grateful to be OK.  We are still experiencing some light aftershocks as I write this.

Do pray for folks in Port-au-Prince.  There are reports of a hospital collapse and other buildings damaged.  The cell phone networks are down here so we can’t contact friends in country.  Check the links below for the latest news.

We have heard that Charles Amicy, his brother Leon and Octavius Delfils are all OK along with their families.  It seems like the destruction is widespread and there may be very deaths.  Pray for our brothers and sisters here in Haiti.  We will keep you updated as we are able.  At 9PM we are still experiencing aftershocks that we would describe as light to moderate.

Our good friends Randy and Karen Lodder are also safe.  They saw the school they run collapse before their eyes.  Mercifully there was no one inside.  The Lodders, their workers, a neighbor family and two visiting board members are spending the night at their home.

Another friend Chris Rolling of Clean Water for Haiti showed up at our gate just after 9PM.  He was in Port when the quake struck.  He spent the hour before dark trying to pull people from collapsed buildings.  The vehicle he was driving had broken down so he made his way home by tap-tap and motorbike before arriving here at Kaliko.  With the cell phone networks down he was not able to call his wife and let her know he was safe.  By God’s grace all are now safe and secure at their home.
