We don’t usually start our team trips out this way, but the calendar made it so the team’s week started off with a Sunday. It is a fitting way to begin the week since Sunday in the Christian calendar has always been the first day of the week. We worship and rest in order that we might do the work God has called us to. For me it an opportunity to preach at the church in Doglas. Today the message was from 2 Corinthians 5 on being reconciled to God.
It is always fun to introduce Americans to a Haitian worship service. So much is the same and yet the experience is new. Everyone always tries hard to follow along in the songbooks. When the service is over we meet and greet. The brothers and sisters at the Doglas church make everyone feel welcome. The team may not be able to converse with them but a smile and handshake communicate the bond we have in Christ. In the picture at left you can see the beginnings of the work to put a roof on the church. The supports have to go in before the trusses can be put up. Pray for rain as lack of water is delaying the work at present.
On the way home everyone shares their experiences. Ethan has become a regular little tour guide for visiting teams. He is a good listener and has a great memory so that he can communicate that knowledge to others. The dryness of the dry season is evident in the dusty roads and brown vegetation along our route.
Haiti never ceases to bring new sights. Today on our way home we encountered a young boy coming home from the community well. He had about five gallon jugs of water for drinking and cooking at his home. The walk was a long one. Since he had also taken two cows to water he must have figured, “why should I carry these gallon jugs when the cows can do it for me.” He put the jugs over the cow horns and off they went down the path.
