URGENT: pray for vote today

National Palace in Port This is a request for you to pray today for the matter of a new prime minister for Haiti.  As the article below says, the vote could not go forward yesterday and they will try again today.  It is important for Haiti to have a Prime Minister so the work of the government can go on.  Pray that wisdom would prevail.

Miami Herald July 30, 2008: Vote for Haiti PM nominee postponed

Haiti's senate indefinitely postponed a ratification vote of prime minister designate Michèle Pierre-Louis after three senators failed to show up, preventing the vote from taking place.

Several senators told The Miami Herald there were at least a dozen votes in favor of Pierre-Louis' ratification, but without 16 out of 18 sitting senators present for a quorum, no vote could take place.

Two weeks ago, Haiti's lower chamber ratified Pierre-Louis, and a vote by the senate on Wednesday would have been a major step in ending Haiti's near four-month old political crisis.

Under Haiti's 1987 Constitution, the prime minister must be ratified by both houses of parliament and then return for a second round of voting -- this time with the cabinet and political agenda.

Currently at issue are disagreements between Haitian President René Préval and Haiti's major political parties, who have failed to completely sign off on a deal struck by the president and lawmakers to ensure Pierre-Louis' ratification.

After initially stating that he doesn't want the political parties to control any of the cabinet posts in the new government, Préval has agreed to integrate them.

But some political actors are not trusting the president to keep his word, and say there is -- for the time being -- no deal.
