Haiti is certainly no Eden. Years of cutting down trees have left it barren and dry for the most part. Growing a garden is no easy task. But we are always up for a challenge. There are not many nutrients in the soil but there is plenty of sunshine. So all we can do is pray that God would make it grow.
Our first section of garden is for growing melons. Our good friends Chris & Leslie Rolling brought us some “black” earth we moved into a small section of our yard. It is a lot better than the clay and rock we have everywhere else. The kids planted the seeds. And behold, the watermelons are growing. Not much to show for our work but if we get one good specimen we will be happy!
Our second section of garden is for bananas. Wilson, our yard maintenance man, planted the banana stocks and prepared the area. When a banana tree gives its fruit, you hack off the tree and wait for the new shoots to appear. Chris gave us 12 banana suckers that we planted. As you can see some came up. We will try and water them faithfully and a year from now we will have lots of “fig” or bananas.
Three of the shoots did not survive so we are going to replace them with plantain. We love our “chip banan” so it will be a good addition to our garden. Along with our mango and lime trees and everything we buy at the market, we eat well.
