Team Haiti 2009.1: To Lagonav

Team Haiti on ferry Team Haiti version 1 arrived on Monday after a red-eye flight from Los Angeles and the morning flight into Port-au-Prince.  They arrived tired but ready to go.  By mid-afternoon we were at our house in Kaliko and heading to the beach for a swim.

Preparing for the trip to Lagonav is always fun.  Checking bags, loading them into the truck, carrying them down the wharf.  The boat was full but we found spots for the team, the Hopp family including Thai plus our 20 odd bags.

IMG_9252We arrived safely on the other side after the 1 hour and 15 minute ride.  The water was a little choppy but the full load smoothed it out.  We did see some flying fish on the crossing.  The last few days have been amazingly hazy, so we didn’t even see the island until we were half way across.

We contacted the wharf several times in Ansagale.  The ferry came toward the dock and ran into the the concrete – a little too fast and off center.  They final got it right and everyone exited off the front of the boat.  Then the disorder of moving all the supplies off the boat.  Needless to say we waited until most others had cleared out.

Broc and Ethan fix the pipes

Once we arrive at the guest house there is always work to do.  Some swept out the house, others organized the kitchen and Broc supervised fixing the water.  The pipes have been blocked up so we used the water pump to flush them out.  We now have two working showers.  Thanks Broc.  The picture shows Elijah helping Broc put a new elbow in the pipes to the kitchen sink.

Tomorrow we begin the Vacation Bible School programs.  It will be a long day of driving as we make our way to Plenn Mapou.  More next time.
