Life constantly has its challenges in Haiti and one of the more recent ones has been our wire. We are talking about the wire(s) that bring us electricity from the resort at Kaliko. As you can see from the picture at left the wires are a mess – they are worn out, been cut several times and one of the wires is not a heavy enough gauge for the task. So Jethro, also pictured at left, is in charge of replacing the line and putting in some new junction boxes.
Like most jobs here Jethro needs some help. Our yard-man Wilson is helping with the digging of the trench. The whole wire is encased in PVC pipe and then buried in the ground. It comes from the resort to their manager’s house and then to our house as a separate line. Whenever Kaliko’s diesel generator is one we have power. Or at least that is the idea.
Another person helping dig the trench and bury the wire is Antenard. He is an elderly gentleman who takes care of a nearby property in our neighborhood. He and Wilson are good friends and we always enjoy talking with Antenard. He is a hard worker who is originally from Lagonav. Though he has very little he is at church every Sunday. Normally earlier in the year he would have been out planting in his fields. He didn’t this year because he had no seed and the soil is very poor. It was just not worth it he says. Talk about toiling with sweat and tears.
And finally the job is finished. We are praying this will be the last time we have to deal with power issues for a while. The kids are happy because now they can have air conditioning in their room at night. Heather served the men some bouyon, soup with chaya and other vegetables plus chicken. It smelled great and filled everyone up.
